Quinn's first set of headphones were actually glued around his ears. This was for his hearing test. To conduct the test, a very fast series of thousands of clicks is played into the headphones. If he is hearing them, the signal will be passed down his auditory nerve and ultimately into his central nervous system. The electrodes then pick this up. He passed the test with flying colors, and he didn't even wake up!
